RWANDA -Key prosecution witness in genocide case against Dr Eugene Rwamucyo makes U-TURN in testimony given behind closed doors. Emmanuel Birasa, a former Transport Ministry employee told French court last week that allegations in his written affidavit against Rwamucyo are false.
In affidavit, Birasa had claimed he provided & drove the bulldozer to cover mass Graves of Tutsis killed during the 1994 genocide. All this was done together with Dr Rwamucyo, then a medical school lecturer at the now-defunct National University of Rwanda (NUR) in Huye district.
The affidavit said Birasa & Rwamucyo laughed during the action. However, transported from Rwanda to the Paris court, Birasa reportedly asked for his verbal testimony to be heard in camera. Granted, Birasa told the French bench that he needed a guarantee of asylum and protection.
n exchange, Birasa said would tell the “truth”. He said worked with Rwamucyo at University but were never involved in the genocide. He reportedly apologized to Rwamucyo for lying about him. Over 400 survivors want compensation from Rwamucyo. There over 50 prosecution witnesses.
