The East african site has seen an invitation letter sent to all the NRM MPs by the Government Chief Whip, Denis Hamson Obua, who is also the NRM Caucus Chairperson.
“This is to notify and invite you for a Caucus Meeting scheduled to take place on Friday 1st November 2024, at 9:30am at the Kisozi Country Farm, Gomba District,” said part of the invitation letter.
The agenda of the meeting has not been stated, but it is happening when a stalemate exists in Parliament over the contentious Coffee Amendment Bill.
The Bill seeking to mainstream the Uganda Coffee Development Authority (UCDA) to the mother Ministry of Agriculture has attracted strong opposition from the Buganda Caucus and the Kingdom.
The Members of Parliament say such a move would have disastrous consequences for Uganda’s coffee industry and affect the livelihoods of over 12.5 million people.
Buganda Kingdom Prime Minister Peter Mayiga also weighed in the debate, saying dissolving UCDA would amount to punishing Baganda.
The government has maintained that the Coffee Amendment Bill is part of the rationalization process aimed at ceasing duplication of functions, overlaps and wasteful expenditure and to realign service delivery. The process started in February 2021.
